The Introducing eGovernment through Digital Health Project
The Introducing eGovernment through Digital Health Project in Tonga, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Tonga came into effect in October 2019. The project, funded by a US$8.5 million grant, of which the Kingdom of Tonga finances US$1 million in kind, has been administered by the Ministry of Health's Project Management Unit with an expected completion date of 31 August 2026.
The project introduces Tonga’s first National Health Information System (NHIS), and the first integrated national health information system in the Pacific. The NHIS will enable two-way communication between planned and existing health data systems, allowing for health information reporting that meets the needs of different users and decision-makers; and the digitization of paper-based health data collection methods, including reporting of births and deaths (supporting data links through the Civil Registration for Vital Statistics between the Ministries of Health and Justice).
The eHealth project contributes to the achievement of the Tonga Strategic Development Framework, 2015–2025, particularly organizational outcome 2.5 on universal health coverage. The project also supports the implementation of the Tonga Digital Government Strategic Framework 2019-2024.
